Why We Built B8Mates: Mates First, Everything Else Optional

Men spend hours on Grindr and the like and still end up lonely. Here is why we built B8Mates around Tribes, real-life meetups and properly organised group sessions — and what we expect from everyone who uses it.

If you are a man who connects with other men — gay, bi, curious or straight — you have probably spent more hours than you would admit on Grindr, Scruff, Sniffies or whatever came after them. Scroll, tap, “hey”, wait, repeat. Occasionally it works. More often you close the app at 1am, slightly wired and no less alone than when you opened it.

That is not a personal failing. It is the design. Hookup grids are built to keep you scrolling, not to leave you with people in your life. After a decade of it, a lot of men know hundreds of torsos within five kilometres and have nobody to call on a Sunday afternoon.

B8Mates exists because we were those men, and we got tired of it.

The problem nobody built for

Men are lonelier than at any point in living memory. The share of men with no close friends has roughly quintupled in thirty years. Gay and bi men are often hit harder — smaller social circles, sometimes strained family ties — but straight and curious blokes are not far behind, and the apps where men find each other are optimised for a twenty-minute outcome rather than a mate you still have in twenty years.

Meanwhile the things that actually make friends — doing something together, repeatedly, with the same people — have no home in those apps. There is no “let's go surfing Saturday” button on Grindr. There is no way to find the three other blokes in your suburb who are into camping, or retro gaming, or lifting. And if what you want is a relaxed group session with mates rather than a one-on-one hookup, you are stuck posting on forums and hoping.

Tribes: friendship with something to do

The centre of B8Mates is the Tribe: a community inside the app built around an interest and, usually, a place. Surfing on the northern beaches. Weeknight gaming. Camping and 4WD. Climbing. Footy. Bating. Anything a member wants to start. Each Tribe has its own feed, members list and — crucially — its own events.

Tribes work because they fix the order of operations. Instead of meeting a stranger for sex and hoping friendship follows, you meet men because you share something, do that thing together a few times, and let everything else be optional. Some of those men become your closest mates. Some become bate mates as well. Some stay surf buddies and nothing more. All of those are good outcomes.

M8s and Close M8s give that structure a shape: a wider circle of men you know, and an inner circle who see more of you — including, if you choose, the private albums and the parts of your profile you do not show the world.

Events: real life, properly organised

Every Tribe can run events, but events are not limited to Tribes. Any premium member can create one: a date, a time, a venue or a general area, and an audience — everyone, your M8s, your Close M8s, a specific Tribe, or invitation only. Men register their interest, the host approves who comes, and the app opens a private group chat for the people going.

That machinery works just as well for a Sunday hike as it does for a group JO session, and we built it deliberately to handle both. Other apps make organising a group bate awkward at best: no way to vet attendees, no way to keep the address private until you trust someone, no shared chat to sort out the details. On B8Mates the host sees who has registered, accepts the men he wants, shares the exact location only after acceptance, and everyone coordinates in one place. It is the difference between a plan and a hope.

And because events carry the same visibility controls as everything else, you can run a quiet session for four Close M8s or an open meet for your whole Tribe with equal ease.

Discreet, encrypted, ad-free

We built B8Mates for men who need discretion as much as for men who do not. Hide your face until you choose to show it, show approximate distance or none, keep albums private, go invisible with discreet mode, block anyone instantly. Chat is end-to-end encrypted and photos shared in chat can be revoked. There are no ads and no data brokers; optional premium pays the bills, and alpha members get it free.

What we ask of you

A community like this only works if everyone looks after it and each other. So we ask three things.

Consent and respect, always. Agree what a session is before it starts, respect a “no” without argument, and never share photos, chat or names outside the room. Our Community Guidelines spell this out and we enforce them.

Safe practices, every time. Meet new people somewhere you can leave easily, tell someone where you are, know your limits with alcohol and anything else, and look after your sexual health — regular testing, PrEP if it is right for you, and honest conversations. We have written a separate guide to staying safe at meets and sessions; please read it.

Your call, no shame. If something feels off — before, during or after — you can leave, stop, cancel or not turn up, and you do not owe anyone an explanation. A good host and a good mate will understand. Anyone who does not is someone to block and report.

The fine print

B8Mates is a platform that helps adults find and communicate with each other. Events, meetups and sessions are organised and run by members, not by B8Mates or Neuriff Pty Ltd. We do not vet venues, supervise events or verify anything a member tells you beyond confirming they are an adult, and we are not responsible or liable for what happens at any event or meeting arranged through the app, for the conduct of any member, or for any loss, injury or damage arising from them. Attending is entirely at your own risk and judgement. All members must be 18 or over, must comply with the law where they are, and are bound by our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines, which govern the use of the platform. Nothing on this site is medical, legal or safety advice.

We put that plainly not to scare anyone but because it is true, and because the men who do best on B8Mates are the ones who take their own safety seriously.

Mates first

The tagline is not a slogan, it is the order of operations. Find your people, do things with them, and let the rest follow if it follows. If you are tired of the grid, come and build something better with us.

Put it into practice

B8Mates is the free, ad-free social app for men — friendship first, everything else optional.
